Travel nurse packing list: what to bring for a 13-week contract

A travel nurse packing list, bag by bag: luggage, packing cubes, your document folder, bedding for a furnished rental and a small kitchen box that fits the trunk.

Packing for a travel contract is packing for three months of your life in one go. Not a vacation, not a move, something awkwardly in between. You need work clothes for a dress code you have not seen yet, bedding for a bed you have not slept in, and enough kitchen to cook on your days off, all of it ready to be packed up again in thirteen weeks.

This list goes bag by bag. The daily shift bag, lunch box and water bottle are covered in our shift bag guide, and they come with you unchanged. Here we cover the bigger stuff: the luggage, the folder that holds your career, the bedding and the kitchen box.

First: flying or driving?

This decides everything else. Flying means two bags, strict weight limits and a lot of choices. Driving means the trunk is your limit, and you can bring a pillow, a topper and an air fryer without anyone weighing them.

Most travelers drive for at least some contracts. If you do, pack the car so the overnight bag is on top: if the drive takes two days, you do not want to unpack the whole trunk at a motel. And plan the drive for after a proper sleep, not straight off your last shift. A CDC survey found drowsy driving was more common in people who usually sleep six hours or less.

The luggage

A big hardside spinner is the workhorse. It holds scrubs, two pairs of shoes, clothes for days off and a season’s worth of layers, and an expansion zip gives you room for whatever you buy along the way.

Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Spinner (Large)

Best for

Flying to an assignment, or the one big case that holds scrubs, shoes and a season of clothes.

Worth knowing

Large checked bags get close to airline weight limits fast. Weigh it before you leave the house.

Then a carry-on that works as a weekend bag. Many travelers fly home on long weekends in the middle of a contract, so a good carry-on gets used far more than the big case.

Carry-on Bin C1 · Big ticket

Travelpro Platinum Elite Softside Carry-On Spinner

The carry-on built by a company that started with flight crews.

A softside carry-on with a sturdy handle, magnetic spinner wheels, an expansion zip and lots of outside pockets. Travelpro sells it with a limited lifetime warranty, per the maker.

Best for

The bag that rides in the car to every assignment, then flies home for the weekend.

Worth knowing

Check your airline's carry-on size before you buy. Some versions run a little large for budget carriers.

Packing cubes: unpack in minutes

Packing cubes change the first night in a new place. Instead of emptying a suitcase onto the floor, you lift out a cube of scrubs, a cube of socks and a cube of day-off clothes, and put them straight into drawers. When the contract ends, it goes in reverse.

Best for

Living out of a suitcase for the first week, then dropping whole cubes into a rental dresser.

Worth knowing

Cubes organize, they do not shrink. You can still overfill the suitcase.

A simple system: one cube for scrubs, one for compression socks and underlayers, one for clothes for days off, and one for chargers and cables. Our compression sock guide covers how many pairs you want for a week.

Bedding: bring your own

Furnished rentals come with bedding. Sometimes it is nice. Sometimes it is a scratchy duvet of unknown history. Bringing your own sheets and pillow is the cheapest way to sleep well from night one, and it means you know they are clean.

A soft brushed microfiber sheet set with deep pockets, in a long list of colors and sizes. Light, quick to dry, and easy to pack two sets.

Best for

Furnished rentals where the bedding is a mystery, and the topper that needs a deep fitted sheet.

Worth knowing

Check the rental bed size before you leave. "Queen" is not always queen, and a topper adds height.

Your own pillow matters even more. It is the one thing that makes a strange bed feel like yours. An adjustable one lets you tune it to whatever mattress you end up with.

Best for

Anyone who sleeps badly on strange pillows, which is most people.

Worth knowing

It can smell a little foamy at first. Let it air out before the first night.

A comforter takes up half a suitcase, which is where vacuum bags come in. They squash bedding and winter coats flat for the trunk.

Best for

Bringing your own bedding and a winter coat to a summer contract that runs into fall.

Worth knowing

They save space, not weight. Compressed bedding in a suitcase can push you over a baggage limit.

When you arrive, check the bed before you unpack onto it. The EPA’s bed bug travel advice is to inspect the mattress and headboard and keep luggage off the bed and the floor. When you get home, put clothes straight into the wash and use a hot dryer.

The document folder

This is the most important thing you pack, and it should ride in the car with you or in your carry-on, never in checked luggage. It holds:

  • Licenses, including your compact license if you have one. The Nurse Licensure Compact lets nurses with a multistate license work in other compact states, but if you change your primary state of residence to another compact state, you need to apply for a license there within 60 days.
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC or whatever your specialty needs, with expiry dates you can see at a glance.
  • Immunization and titer records, your latest TB test, and your flu shot record.
  • Contract, housing lease and agency contacts.
  • Pay stubs, receipts and housing paperwork. Keep records and ask a tax professional about anything to do with travel pay.

Best for

Onboarding week, when a new facility asks for every document you own, twice.

Worth knowing

Keep scanned copies in a secure cloud folder too. Paper gets lost in moves, and agencies usually want digital uploads anyway.

Scan every page into a secure cloud folder as well. Onboarding portals almost always want uploads, and your phone at 11 p.m. is easier than a scanner.

The kitchen box

Rental kitchens are a lottery. Some have everything. Some have one warped pan and a knife that cannot cut butter. A small kitchen box covers the gap: one good appliance, one good knife, a cutting board, a few containers and your favorite spices.

An Instant Pot is the best single appliance for shift meals. Batch cook on a day off, portion it out, and come home from a twelve to dinner that only needs reheating.

One-pot cooking Bin E2 · Proper gift

Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 (6 qt)

Best for

Meal prep in a rental kitchen, and coming home from a twelve to food that cooked itself.

Worth knowing

It is bulky. If the trunk is already full, the air fryer is the smaller of the two.

And one sharp knife. Every rental knife is dull. Every single one. Pack it with a blade guard.

Victorinox Fibrox Pro 8 Inch Chef's Knife

Best for

Anyone who cooks on days off and is tired of sawing tomatoes.

Worth knowing

Buy a blade guard to pack it. Hand wash it, and never pack it in a carry-on.

For the lunch containers and bottle, see the shift bag guide. For an air fryer and the rest of the apartment, see the housing setup guide.

What to skip

  • More than a week of scrubs. You might need a new color for the new facility. Wait for the dress code.
  • Every pair of shoes you own. Two pairs of work shoes to rotate and one for days off. Our shoe guide helps pick the two.
  • Full sets of pots and pans. One appliance and one knife beat a box of cookware you will use twice.
  • Original documents you do not need. Bring certified copies where you can, and keep originals somewhere safe at home.
  • Decorations. One or two photos and your pillow do more than a box of throw cushions.

The packing checklist

  1. Big suitcase and a carry-on
  2. Packing cubes: scrubs, socks and underlayers, day-off clothes, cables
  3. Document folder (in the car or carry-on), plus cloud scans
  4. Two pairs of work shoes and a week of compression socks
  5. Your own sheets and pillow, comforter in a vacuum bag
  6. Kitchen box: one appliance, one knife, a cutting board, containers
  7. Your daily shift bag, lunch bag and bottle
  8. Chargers, a power bank and a power strip

Not sure what else you need once you are there? Start with the travel nurse essentials.

Each facility’s dress code, onboarding requirements and policies come first, so check them before you pack.
