A travel nurse’s home changes every thirteen weeks or so. New city, new hospital, new furnished rental with one dull knife, a mystery coffee maker and a painting of a boat. The job is the same everywhere. Home is the part that has to be rebuilt each time.
So this list is not about shifts. The general gifts for nurses guide covers that. This page is about home on the road: staying close to the people they left, keeping a record of where they have been, and turning a bare rental into somewhere worth coming back to after a twelve. Three rules for buying for a traveler
- It has to pack, or stay home on purpose. Most gifts should fit in the trunk. A few can live at home base, where they wait for every visit.
- It should work in any rental. Any state, any kitchen, any wall.
- Connection beats stuff. The hard part of travel nursing is usually not the work. It is being far from people.
Gifts for homesick evenings
The CDC treats social connection as a real health issue, not a nice extra. Feeling connected to others supports mental and physical health, and loneliness is linked to problems like depression and heart disease. A travel nurse’s whole support network may be a thousand miles away.
A Wi-Fi photo frame closes that gap better than anything else here. Family and friends send photos from an app, and they pop up on the frame in the rental. A new photo of the dog, the niece, the backyard. It is the gift that keeps arriving. Load it with photos before you ship it.
Aura Carver Digital Photo Frame
Family can send photos to it from home, so the rental feels less like a rental.
A Wi-Fi photo frame that shows photos sent from the Aura app. Family and friends can add pictures from anywhere, and new ones just show up on the frame.
- Connection
- Wi-Fi
- Photos
- Added from the app, from anywhere
Best for
The long middle weeks of a contract, when home feels very far away.
Worth knowing
It needs Wi-Fi to get new photos, so check the rental has it. Set it up before you wrap it.
Maps of a career
Two versions of the same idea, one for the road and one for home.
A scratch-off map of the US rolls up into a tube and goes wherever they go. They scratch off each state they work in, and after a few contracts it is a map of a career. It also makes a great farewell gift from a unit they are leaving.
Scratch Off Map of the United States
A wall map of every state the contracts took them to.
A poster of the US with a foil layer you scratch off state by state as you go. Many sets add a national parks poster for the days off between shifts.
- Format
- Poster with scratch-off foil
- Extras
- Often a scratch tool, some add a parks poster
Best for
A first contract, a contract milestone, or a farewell gift from the unit.
Worth knowing
Most are posters, not framed. Rolled is easier to move, which suits the life.
A framed push pin map is the state-by-state checklist for the wall back home. One pin per contract city. Every visit home starts with adding a new pin, which is a nice little ritual for the family too. It is big and framed, so it stays at home base rather than riding in the trunk.
Framed Push Pin Travel Map of the US
A framed state-by-state checklist for the wall back home.
A framed US map on a corkboard back, sold with colored pins. One pin per contract city, and the map slowly turns into a record of a career.
- Back
- Cork or foam board for pins
- Includes
- Push pins, by listing
Best for
Hanging at home base, so every visit home starts with a new pin.
Worth knowing
Framed and fairly big, so it lives at home, not in the trunk. The scratch map is the version that travels.
Almost every contract city has a national park within a day’s drive. The National Geographic guide to the US parks turns a stretch of days off into a plan. The Kindle edition saves trunk space if they are short on room.
National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States
Every contract city has a park a day trip away. This finds it.
A guidebook to the US national parks with maps, photos, trails and the best things to see in each. A good excuse to plan a day off around the new state.
- Format
- Paperback, Kindle
- Covers
- Every US national park
Best for
Travelers who use stretches between shifts to explore.
Worth knowing
A big book. The Kindle edition saves trunk space.
Gifts for life on the move
AirTags for the checked bag, the work bag and the keys to yet another apartment. Small, useful and very popular with people who fly between contracts. They are built for iPhone, so check first.
Apple AirTag
Know where your suitcase is, even when the airline does not.
A small tracker that shows its location in the Find My app on an iPhone. Drop one in a checked bag, one in a work bag and one on your keys.
- Works with
- iPhone and the Find My app
- Power
- Replaceable coin battery
Best for
Checked luggage, the work bag, and keys in a new apartment.
Worth knowing
Built for iPhone. Android users should look at a tracker made for their phone instead. It tracks things, not people.
A weekender duffel is the bag for everything that is not the big move: a weekend flight home, a road trip to that national park, a friend’s wedding three states away. The Herschel Novel has a separate side pocket for shoes, so work shoes never touch clean clothes.
Herschel Novel Duffle
The weekend-home bag, with a separate pocket for the shoes.
A soft weekender duffel with a side zip pocket for shoes. Good for a weekend flight home, a road trip on days off, or a few shifts of scrubs.
- Style
- Soft duffel with shoulder strap
- Extras
- Side shoe compartment
Best for
Short trips between contracts, and the bag that lives in the back seat.
Worth knowing
No wheels. For the full move between contracts, a rolling suitcase still wins.
Gifts for the rental kitchen
Every furnished rental has a coffee maker that someone else descaled in 2019, maybe. Fix the coffee first.
An AeroPress makes a smooth cup in about a minute with a kettle. Light, nearly unbreakable and easy to rinse.
AeroPress Original Coffee Maker
Good coffee, whatever the rental coffee machine looks like.
A small press that makes a cup of coffee in about a minute with a kettle and ground coffee. Light, hard to break and easy to rinse.
- Makes
- One to two cups at a time
- Body
- Durable plastic, packs small
Best for
Coffee people moving between rentals, hotel rooms and break rooms.
Worth knowing
It makes one or two cups at a time. You need a kettle or another way to heat water.
For espresso fans, the Nanopresso pulls a real shot with a hand pump and hot water. No outlet, no counter space, and it fits in a glovebox.
Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker
Real espresso from a gadget the size of a water bottle.
A hand-pumped espresso maker that needs hot water and ground coffee, no power. Packs into a bag or glovebox and works in any rental, hotel or rest stop.
- Power
- None, hand pumped
- Makes
- Single espresso shot
Best for
Espresso people who have given up on rental coffee makers.
Worth knowing
You pump it by hand and it makes one shot at a time. It needs hot water from a kettle.
Rental kitchens come with salt and, if they are lucky, pepper. A travel spice kit filled with their favorites means the first dinner in a new city tastes like home. Fill it before you wrap it, and label everything, unless you enjoy surprises in the chili.
Travel Spice Kit
Because every rental kitchen comes with salt and nothing else.
A small zip case of refillable spice containers. Fill it with their favorites and the first dinner in a new rental tastes like home.
- Holds
- Several small spice containers
- Case
- Zip case, by listing
Best for
Cooks moving every thirteen weeks who hate buying the same spices in every state.
Worth knowing
Most kits come empty. Fill it before you wrap it, and label everything.
An Instant Pot turns one day off into a week of shift meals. Batch cook, portion it out, and come home from a twelve to food that cooked itself.
Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 (6 qt)
A week of shift meals from one pot and one outlet.
An electric pressure cooker that also slow cooks, sautes, steams and makes rice. Batch cook on a day off and portion it into containers for the week.
- Capacity
- 6 quarts
- Functions
- Pressure cook, slow cook, saute, steam, rice
Best for
Meal prep in a rental kitchen, and coming home from a twelve to food that cooked itself.
Worth knowing
It is bulky. If the trunk is already full, the air fryer is the smaller of the two.
Gifts for the rental itself
“Laundry nearby” in a rental listing often means a coin laundromat a mile away. A portable washer hooks up to a sink and handles a few sets of scrubs. It is a big gift, so check with them (and the landlord) first.
COMFEE' Portable Washing Machine (0.9 cu ft)
For the rental where "laundry nearby" means a coin laundromat a mile away.
A compact washer on wheels that hooks up to a kitchen or bathroom faucet and drains into a sink or tub. Big enough for a few sets of scrubs and socks.
- Capacity
- 0.9 cu ft
- Hookup
- Faucet adapter, drain hose
- Moves on
- Built-in rollers
Best for
Washing scrubs after every shift when the rental has no machine.
Worth knowing
Ask the landlord first: it needs a faucet adapter, a drain and a nearby wall outlet. It washes and spins but does not dry, so add a folding drying rack.
Furnished rentals love a tiny TV. A mini projector the size of a soda can throws a movie onto any blank wall, streams apps over Wi-Fi and packs into a bag for the next contract. It is also a surprisingly fun way to video call home on a big screen.
Anker Nebula Capsule Mini Projector
A big screen for a rental with a tiny TV, or no TV at all.
A can-sized smart projector that throws a movie onto any blank wall and streams apps over Wi-Fi. Small enough for a bag, so movie night travels too.
- Size
- About the size of a soda can
- Streaming
- Built-in apps over Wi-Fi, by model
Best for
Furnished rentals with a sad little TV, and video calls home on a big wall.
Worth knowing
Works best in a dark room. Check which version you buy, as brightness and apps vary by model.
The free gift that matters most
Most travelers drive to at least some contracts, often alone. In a CDC survey, about 1 in 24 adults said they had fallen asleep at the wheel in the past month. Offer to video call when they stop for gas, and tell them to sleep before the drive, not after.
How to get a gift to someone who keeps moving
- Ask for the current address, and the end date. If the contract ends in two weeks, ship to the next place or to home instead.
- Check whether the rental takes packages. An Amazon pickup locker near the hospital is often safer than a busy front step.
- Never ship to the hospital unless they say it is fine.
- Ship home-base gifts home. The push pin map belongs on a wall back home, so send it there.
Gifts to skip
- Anything big and decorative for the rental. It will not survive the next move.
- Plants that need daily care. They will not survive a weekend trip home.
- Gift cards for local stores. They will be in a different state by spring.
- Scrubs in a color you guessed. Every facility sets its own dress code.
- More luggage than they can lift. One great bag beats a matching set.
The quick version
- Homesick: a Wi-Fi photo frame
- A record of the road: a scratch map, a push pin map and a parks guide
- On the move: AirTags and a weekender duffel
- Rental kitchen: an AeroPress, a Nanopresso, a spice kit or an Instant Pot
- The rental itself: a portable washer or a mini projector
More on making a rental livable is in the travel nurse housing setup guide, and the packing list shows what already fills the trunk. For shift gifts, see gifts for nurses.
Check the rental’s rules before anything that hooks to a faucet or goes on a wall. The landlord’s deposit rules come first.
