The listing said “cozy, fully furnished, close to the hospital.” It turns out cozy means small, furnished means a sagging mattress and three forks, and close means the ambulance route runs right past the bedroom window. Welcome to week one.
You cannot renovate a rental, and you will be gone in thirteen weeks anyway. But a handful of things, none of which need a drill, turn most short-term housing into a place where you can sleep after nights, wash your scrubs and eat something that is not from a gas station. This guide covers them. For the general science of sleeping after nights, see our night shift guide. This page is about doing it in a room you do not own.

The first hour in a new place
Before you unpack, do a quick walk-through:
- Check the bed. The EPA’s bed bug travel tips say to look over the mattress seams and headboard, and to keep bags off the bed and the floor until you have.
- Find the alarms. Is there a working smoke alarm, and a carbon monoxide alarm near the bedroom? Test them.
- Check the locks on every door and ground floor window.
- Find the outlets. You will be surprised how few there are.
- Look at the bedroom window at the time you will be sleeping. On nights, that is late morning, when the sun is at its worst.
Then unpack. Take photos of any damage while you are at it, so you are not arguing about a scratched table in thirteen weeks.
Sleep: the bed
Rental mattresses have usually had a hard life. A memory foam topper fixes most of them for a fraction of what a mattress costs, and rolls up for the next move. Put your own sheets and pillow on top and the bed is suddenly yours.
LINENSPA 3 Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Fixes the furnished-rental mattress without replacing it.
A 3 inch gel-infused memory foam topper that sits on top of whatever mattress the rental came with. It arrives rolled and compressed, and rolls back up (loosely) for the next move.
- Thickness
- 3 inches
- Foam
- Gel-infused memory foam
- Sizes
- Twin to California king
Best for
Sagging, lumpy or rock hard rental beds, and day sleepers who need every comfort they can get.
Worth knowing
Give it a day or two to expand and air out. A queen topper takes real trunk space, so strap it rolled.
Sleep: the window
If you work nights in a new place, the bedroom has to get dark. Rentals rarely come with blackout curtains, and you cannot drill rods into the wall. A shade that sticks to the glass with suction cups works on almost any window, and comes down without a mark.
Amazon Basics Portable Blackout Curtain
Blackout for the room you do not own.
A fold-up blackout shade that sticks to the window glass with suction cups and hook-and-loop tabs, no rod or drill needed, and packs into its own carry case.
- Fitting
- Suction cups, hook-and-loop tabs
- Size
- Large, trims to fit with the tabs
- Storage
- Carry case
Best for
Travel nurses, renters, and sleeping at a relative's place between shifts.
Worth knowing
Suction cups need clean, smooth glass and can let go in a hot window. Press them on again before bed.
Add a sleep mask for the light that leaks round the edges. Our night shift guide has the pick.
Sleep: the noise
A new building means new noises: neighbors with different schedules, a highway you did not notice when you toured, a dog that barks at exactly 11 a.m. A small rechargeable white noise machine smooths it over, and it travels with you to motel stops on the drive.
Yogasleep Rohm Portable White Noise Machine
Brings your own quiet to a building full of strangers.
A palm-sized, rechargeable sound machine with white noise, deep noise and surf sounds. It charges over USB and has a lanyard, so it also works in hotel rooms on the drive.
- Power
- Rechargeable, USB
- Sounds
- Several white noise and nature sounds
Best for
Thin apartment walls, new neighbors, and road trip motel nights between assignments.
Worth knowing
Battery life drops at full volume. Leave it plugged in for long day sleeps.
For louder places, earplugs on top. Comfortable ones you can sleep on your side in are worth the small upgrade.
Loop Quiet Earplugs
Reusable quiet for a loud daytime house.
Soft silicone reusable earplugs that sit flush in the ear, comfortable enough to sleep in on your side.
- Material
- Silicone, reusable
- Fit
- Several tip sizes
Best for
Daytime sleep with traffic, kids or a dog.
Worth knowing
You may not hear an alarm. Use a phone on your pillow or a vibrating alarm.
Sleeping after nights in a strange place
The usual night shift advice still applies, and the NIOSH training for nurses on shift work is a good read on why daytime sleep is harder. Two things matter more when everything else is new:
- Protect one fixed block of sleep. Research on shift schedules has found that an “anchor” block of sleep at the same time every day, even on days off, helps keep body rhythms steadier. When the unit, the commute and the city are all new, a fixed sleep time is one thing you can control.
- Learn the commute before your first night shift. Drive it once in daylight. NIOSH warns about drowsy driving after long hours, and an unfamiliar route at 7:30 a.m. after a twelve is when it bites. If you are too tired, nap before you drive.
Safety: no install required
You are sleeping during the day, in a place where you do not know the neighbors yet, sometimes on the ground floor. A wedge door alarm slides under an inward-opening door and screams if the door moves. It costs little, needs no tools and gives you peace of mind every single time you lie down.
SABRE Wedge Door Stop Security Alarm
A doorstop that screams.
A wedge you slide under an inward-opening door. Push the door and the wedge jams it while a loud siren goes off. No tools and no damage to the rental.
- Fitting
- Wedge under the door, no tools
- Power
- 9V battery
Best for
Sleeping during the day in a new place, ground floor units, and motel stops on the drive.
Worth knowing
It only works on doors that open inward, and only if the gap under the door is small enough. It takes a 9V battery.
If the rental has gas heat, a gas stove, a fireplace or an attached garage, bring your own carbon monoxide alarm as well. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises CO alarms near sleeping areas and regular testing. A battery model sits on the nightstand.
Kidde Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Because you do not know how old that furnace is.
A battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm with a digital display. No wiring, so it sits on a nightstand or dresser near where you sleep and moves with you.
- Power
- Batteries
- Display
- Digital readout
Best for
Furnished rentals with gas heat, a gas stove or an attached garage.
Worth knowing
It does not replace the smoke and CO alarms a landlord should provide. Test it when you move in.
Power: the outlet problem
Every rental has exactly one outlet in the bedroom, and the bed is in front of it. A power strip with a long cord brings power to the nightstand for your phone, watch, white noise machine and lamp.
Anker Power Strip with USB-C (5 ft cord)
Every rental has exactly one outlet, and it is behind the couch.
A compact surge-protected power strip with several outlets, USB-A and USB-C ports, and a 5 foot cord that reaches the nightstand from the outlet that is never by the bed.
- Ports
- AC outlets plus USB-A and USB-C
- Cord
- About 5 ft
- Protection
- Surge protected
Best for
Charging a phone, watch, white noise machine and lamp from one wall outlet.
Worth knowing
Plug space heaters, air fryers and washers straight into the wall, never into a strip. Do not chain strips together.
Two rules. Plug anything that heats (air fryers, space heaters, hair tools) or has a motor (a washer) straight into a wall outlet, not a strip. And do not plug strips or extension cords into each other. If a cord gets warm, unplug it.
Laundry: scrubs every shift
Some rentals have a washer. Many have “laundry nearby,” which can mean a coin laundromat a mile away. If you want to wash scrubs after every shift, that gets old fast.
A portable washer hooks up to a kitchen or bathroom faucet, drains into the sink or tub and handles a few sets of scrubs at a time. It is the biggest buy on this page, and it only makes sense if you will use it most weeks. Ask the landlord first, and add a folding drying rack.
COMFEE' Portable Washing Machine (0.9 cu ft)
For the rental where "laundry nearby" means a coin laundromat a mile away.
A compact washer on wheels that hooks up to a kitchen or bathroom faucet and drains into a sink or tub. Big enough for a few sets of scrubs and socks.
- Capacity
- 0.9 cu ft
- Hookup
- Faucet adapter, drain hose
- Moves on
- Built-in rollers
Best for
Washing scrubs after every shift when the rental has no machine.
Worth knowing
Ask the landlord first: it needs a faucet adapter, a drain and a nearby wall outlet. It washes and spins but does not dry, so add a folding drying rack.
The CDC’s guidance on laundering healthcare textiles is aimed at hospitals, but the basics carry over: wash scrubs separately and dry them fully. Our scrubs guide covers fabrics that cope with frequent washing.
Kitchen: one good appliance
Rental kitchens range from great to a microwave and a hot plate. An air fryer is the most useful single appliance for a small kitchen: it roasts vegetables, cooks chicken, reheats leftovers properly and does not heat up the whole apartment the way an oven does in summer.
Ninja Air Fryer (4 qt)
Dinner from a rental kitchen that came with one pan and no oven mitts.
A compact basket air fryer that also roasts, reheats and dehydrates. It cooks real food fast and fits in a corner of a small counter.
- Capacity
- 4 quarts
- Modes
- Air fry, roast, reheat, dehydrate
Best for
Tiny kitchens, broken rental ovens, and reheating leftovers that do not turn soggy.
Worth knowing
Plug it straight into a wall outlet, not a power strip, and give it space to vent.
Prefer batch cooking? The packing list has the Instant Pot and the one sharp knife every rental kitchen is missing.
What to skip
- Anything that needs a drill, nails or adhesive hooks on painted walls. You want your deposit back.
- Full-size furniture. Talk to the housing team instead.
- A space heater as your main heat. If the rental is cold, that is the landlord’s problem to fix.
- A big TV. Your laptop or tablet, and the headphones from the essentials list, do the job.
- Buying everything in week one. Live there for a few days first. You will find out what is actually missing.
The housing checklist
- Check the bed, the alarms, the locks and the outlets
- Mattress topper, plus your own sheets and pillow
- Blackout shade and a sleep mask
- White noise machine and earplugs
- Door stop alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm
- A power strip with a long cord
- Laundry plan: a washer in the unit, a laundromat or a portable washer
- One kitchen appliance and one good knife
Your lease, the landlord’s rules and each facility’s policies come first, so check them before you plug anything in.
