Pediatric nurses play for a living. Not only, obviously. But a big part of the job is turning a scary moment into a game: bubbles during a blood draw, a sticker after vitals, a silly voice to get a three-year-old to open wide. They come home with sticker residue on their scrubs and, now and then, a sadness they do not talk about.
So this gift guide leans into play. Fun things for the nurse to wear, refills for the distraction kit, toys for the grown-ups in the break room, and a couple of quieter picks for the harder days. For the all-round classics that suit any nurse, see our gifts for nurses, or try the gift finder.

Three rules for peds gifts
- Fun, but cleanable. Anything that goes near patients must survive wipes or a hot wash. Researchers who study toys in pediatric settings note they can carry germs between kids, which is why units are strict about them.
- Themes, not characters. Licensed cartoon gear from unknown sellers is often a knockoff. Animals, space and food prints are safer bets.
- Ask before giving to patients. Toys, fidgets and books for patients usually go through the child life team. Gifts for the nurse can be as silly as you like.
Play for the grown-ups
LEGO for the break room
Put a big tub of classic LEGO bricks in a peds break room and see what happens. Within a week there will be a hospital, a giraffe and a tower with a sign on it that says “do not touch.” Building something with your hands for ten minutes is a surprisingly good reset between hard rooms.
LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box (10698)
Break room therapy, in 33 colors.
A big tub of 790 classic LEGO bricks in 33 colors, with windows, doors, wheels and baseplates, and a storage box with a lid. No instructions needed, and no characters.
- Pieces
- 790
- Storage
- Lidded box included
Best for
The peds break room, where grown-ups build weird little towers on their lunch break.
Worth knowing
Small parts, so it lives in the staff break room, never in patient rooms or play areas without child life approval.
This set has no characters and no instructions, just bricks. It has small parts, so it stays in the staff room, not patient areas.
A unit mascot
Peds nurses have strong feelings about plush. A round, squishy one for their locker, desk or car (or the nurses’ station, if the unit allows it) becomes a mascot fast. Stick to the Original designs and buy from the official listing, since fakes are common.
Original Squishmallows Plush, 8 Inch
A unit mascot for the nurses, not the patients.
A round, very squishy plush from the Original Squishmallows range, with its own name and backstory on the tag. Peds nurses tend to have strong feelings about which one is theirs.
- Size
- About 8 inches
- Range
- Original designs
Best for
A peds nurse's locker, desk or car, or a mascot for the nurses' station if the unit allows it.
Worth knowing
Fakes are common, so buy from the official Squishmallows listing and look for the brand tag. Choose an Original design rather than a licensed cartoon one. Not for patient rooms.
This one is for the nurse, not for patients.
Coloring for the person who hands out the crayons
Peds nurses hand out a lot of coloring sheets. Here is one for them. The Secret Garden book started the adult coloring craze, with detailed drawings of flowers and little hidden things to find. Add a pack of colored pencils and it is a quiet day off in a bag.
Secret Garden Coloring Book, by Johanna Basford
Coloring, but for the grown-up who handed out all the crayons.
The detailed ink drawings of flowers and gardens that started the adult coloring book craze, with little things hidden on the pages to find.
- Type
- Adult coloring book
- Theme
- Gardens and flowers
Best for
A quiet hour on a day off. Pair it with a set of colored pencils.
Worth knowing
Very fine detail, so fine-tip pencils or pens work better than markers, which can bleed through.
Fun things to wear
A badge reel that starts conversations
The classic peds gift, and they will actually wear it. A smooth, wipeable animal or food design gives a nervous kid something to look at during a poke.
Animal Design Retractable Badge Reel
The icebreaker that clips to your chest.
A retractable badge reel with a fun animal or food design on the front. In peds it doubles as a conversation starter and a thing to look at during the poke.
- Cord
- Retractable
- Front
- Hard plastic or acrylic design, by style
Best for
Anyone who works with kids, and the classic small thank-you on a peds unit.
Worth knowing
Choose a smooth, wipeable face over fuzzy or glittery ones, and skip anything with small parts a toddler could pull off.
A penlight with a face
Kids follow a light better when it looks like a tiny animal. A multipack means a spare for when one walks off in a small hand.
Animal Print Pediatric Penlights
A penlight that looks like a toy, so the check feels like a game.
Reusable LED penlights with cute animal or cartoon-style designs, usually sold in multipacks. Kids are more likely to follow a light that has a face on it.
- Light
- LED
- Pack
- Usually several in a set
Best for
Pupil checks and throat looks on kids who do not want either.
Worth knowing
Pick designs you can wipe down, and expect a few to walk off in small hands. Warm-white light is kinder than harsh blue-white.
A printed scrub top and caps
A good print top is part of the peds uniform. If you know their size and their unit’s dress code, a cheerful top in a theme they like will get worn. Printed scrub caps add a bit of fun when half their face is behind a mask.
Cherokee Print Scrub Top
A friendly print that tells a scared kid you are the nice one.
Cherokee makes printed scrub tops in a big range of patterns, from animals and space to simple geometrics, in sizes from XXS up and in poly-cotton or stretch blends.
- Fabric
- Poly-cotton or stretch, by line
- Sizes
- XXS to 5XL in many prints
Best for
Peds units where printed tops are part of the culture, and anyone who wants a few prints to rotate with solid pants.
Worth knowing
Check your unit dress code first, since some hospitals set solid colors by role. Patterns run from cute to very cute, so look at the listing photo closely.
Printed Tie-Back Scrub Caps, Multipack
A fun hat makes a mask a little less scary.
Cotton tie-back scrub caps in bright prints, sold in packs, many with a sweatband and buttons for mask loops. When your face is half covered, a cheerful cap gives a kid something to talk about.
- Fabric
- Cotton, by style
- Extras
- Sweatband and mask buttons on many
Best for
PICU, procedure rooms, peds OR days and anyone in a mask for hours.
Worth knowing
Wash them hot with your scrubs, and check whether your procedure areas allow cloth caps at all.
Some hospitals set scrub colors by role, so check before you buy. Our peds scrubs and badge reels guide has more ideas.
Refills for the distraction kit
Peds nurses often buy their own stickers and bubbles when the unit runs low. Refills are cheap, useful and a little bit funny as a gift. A lovely choice from a family whose kid just went home.
Kids Reward Sticker Rolls
The cheapest pain management tool on the unit.
Big rolls or packs of bright reward stickers (animals, stars, "I was brave" styles) for after vitals, pokes and dressing changes.
- Format
- Rolls or sheets, by pack
- Designs
- Mixed kid-friendly prints
Best for
Every peds nurse, tech and resident who wants a calm ending to a hard procedure.
Worth knowing
Check whether your unit stocks them before you buy your own. Keep a single sheet in your pocket, not the whole roll.
Mini Bubble Wands, Party Favor Pack
Blow bubbles, take a deep breath, forget the needle.
Small single-use bubble tubes or wands, sold in bulk as party favors. Blowing bubbles gives a scared kid something to look at and a reason to breathe slowly.
- Format
- Mini tubes with wands
- Pack
- Bulk party favor pack
Best for
Distraction during pokes and dressing changes, and a small gift to send home.
Worth knowing
Bubbles make floors slippery, so blow them away from walkways. Give each child their own tube rather than sharing, and check what your unit and child life team allow.
Older kids are often too cool for stickers. A bulk pack of fidget toys gives them something to squeeze, pop and stretch while the nurse works.
Fidget Toy Party Pack
Something to squeeze besides the parent's hand.
A mixed bag of small fidget toys: squeeze balls, pop-its, stretchy tubes and spinners, sold in bulk as party favors.
- Contents
- Mixed fidget toys
- Age
- Check the box
Best for
A peds nurse who keeps a stash for older kids who are too cool for stickers.
Worth knowing
Many contain small parts, so not for babies and toddlers. Ask the child life team whether they can go to patients at all, since some units only allow new, wipeable or take-home items.
Many fidgets have small parts, so they are not for babies or toddlers. Ask the child life team what can go to patients.
For the harder days
Pediatrics can be emotionally heavy. A 2022 study of pediatric emergency nurses found high burnout, especially among younger and newer nurses. A gift cannot fix that, but it can say “I see you.”
A gentle picture book
The Invisible String is a short picture book about a mother who tells her children they are joined to the people they love by an invisible string, even when they are apart. Families and counselors often use it to talk about separation, and sometimes about loss.
The Invisible String, by Patrice Karst
A gentle picture book about staying connected when people are apart.
A short picture book in which a mother tells her two children they are all joined by an invisible string of love, even when they cannot see each other. Often used to talk about separation, and sometimes about loss.
- Format
- Picture book
- Ages
- About 4 to 8
Best for
A peds nurse or child life specialist who wants a gentle book on hand, or a nurse who is also a parent.
Worth knowing
Families have their own beliefs about loss and what comes after. Using a book with a child is the family's call, often with the child life team.
It is a thoughtful gift for a peds nurse who is also a parent, or for a child life specialist’s shelf. Whether to read it with a sick or grieving child is the family’s call, usually with help from child life, so think of it as a book to have on hand, not one to hand out.
Gifts for child life specialists
Child life specialists prepare kids for procedures, sit with them through the scary parts and turn a hospital room into somewhere a child can play. The American Academy of Pediatrics links their work to less anxiety for kids and families. They often stock their own supplies, so refills are welcome: stickers, bubbles, fidgets and a gentle book. Ask before buying anything for patients, since teams have rules about new, cleanable or take-home items.
Gifts from a family
If your child was looked after on a peds unit, a card with names and details is the gift nurses keep. “Thank you to Sam, who let Maya push the buttons on the pump” means more than anything you can buy. If you want to add something, a refill of stickers or bubbles for the next family is a kind touch. Ask the unit first.
What to skip
- Character merch from unknown sellers. Often counterfeit.
- Toys for patients without asking. Units and child life teams have rules about donated toys.
- Glitter anything. It never leaves. Not the unit, not the car, not their life.
- Scented lotions and candles for work. Scents can bother sick kids, and many units ask staff to avoid them.
- Novelty mugs that say “I survived another shift.” They own six.
Quick picks by budget
- Small: a fun badge reel, an animal penlight, stickers, bubbles, fidgets, a Squishmallow, the coloring book or the picture book
- Mid: a printed scrub top, a pack of fun scrub caps, or LEGO for the break room
