Nurses Week gift ideas for the whole team

Bulk Nurses Week gifts for a whole unit: snacks and chocolate that reach the night shift, coffee and tea for the break room, a massage cushion, one-each gift bags and a team puzzle.

Buying for one nurse is easy. Buying for forty, across three shifts, with a budget set by someone in finance, is a different job. Most units end up with pizza and a branded lanyard, which is fine, but nobody remembers it in June.

This page is only about team gifts: things you buy once and share across a whole unit. It is for managers, charge nurses, unit councils, and patients’ families who want to thank everyone at once. Buying for one nurse instead? Head to the best gifts for nurses or try the gift finder.

When is Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week in the US runs from May 6 to 12 every year, ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, as the American Nurses Association notes. Order early. Bulk orders take longer than you think, and the first week of May is when every other unit in the country is ordering too.

Three rules for team gifts

Reach every shift. Nights and weekends get forgotten constantly. If you put out snacks at noon on a Tuesday, the night crew gets an empty box and some crumbs. Split everything and save a labeled share for them. Night nurses already carry the extra strain of shift work, as the NIOSH training for nurses on shift work explains. Do not make them miss the chocolate too.

Shared beats clutter. A team of thirty does not need thirty more things to store. Food, drinks and things that live in the break room get used and remembered fondly.

Make it personal somehow. A bulk gift with a handwritten note feels like a thank-you. The same gift with no note feels like a delivery. The CDC has reported rising burnout and harassment among health workers, and being noticed matters more than the size of the gift.

Food for the break room

Put it out, label it “for everyone, all shifts,” and let people help themselves.

A big snack box

Forty individually wrapped bags of chips, crackers and cookies cover a long shift for a lot of people. Individually wrapped matters for hygiene, and for the nurse who wants to save theirs for the drive home. Add a few allergy-friendly options if you know the team.

A popcorn tin

A big three-flavor tin sits on the break room table for days, which is exactly what you want. The night shift arrives to find it still half full, which is rare and wonderful.

Gourmet Popcorn Tin, Three Flavors

A tin big enough that the night shift still finds some.

A large divided tin of popcorn, usually caramel, cheese and butter or kettle corn, that sits on the break room table and gets grazed on for days.

Best for

A whole unit, especially one with a night crew who misses the noon snacks.

Worth knowing

Check the listing for allergens and the made-in-a-facility notes. Some tins are sold empty for refills, so read the title.

Wrapped chocolate squares

A large bag of individually wrapped chocolate squares can go in a bowl at the nurses station or into small gift bags. Nobody has to stick their hand in a shared tub. Keep the bag out of a hot car on the way in.

Best for

A team thank-you that works on every shift, and the chocolate drawer every unit secretly has.

Worth knowing

Contains milk and may contain nuts. They melt in a warm car, so do not leave the bag on the dashboard in May.

Drinks for the break room

Coffee pods

If the unit has a pod machine, a big variety box gets used every single shift. Check the machine first, because pods only fit compatible brewers.

Starbucks K-Cup Coffee Pods Variety Pack

Best for

A team gift for a break room with a Keurig-style machine.

Worth knowing

Check the machine first: pods only fit compatible brewers. If there is no machine, a bag of good ground coffee works instead.

A tea sampler

Every unit has tea drinkers who get nothing when the gift is coffee. A variety box with decaf and herbal options also suits night staff who want something warm without wrecking their day sleep.

Twinings Tea Classics Variety Box

For everyone on the unit who does not drink the coffee.

A gift box of tea bags in several flavors, including black, green, herbal and decaf, so the tea drinkers and the people who cannot have caffeine before sleep get something too.

Best for

The break room, next to the coffee pods. Decaf and herbal suit night staff heading home to sleep.

Worth knowing

The flavor mix changes between boxes and seasons. Check the listing if the decaf matters.

A small pod coffee maker

If the break room coffee maker is older than the newest grad, the team could chip in for a compact single-cup brewer. It fits a crowded counter. Ask first, though, because some hospitals have rules about appliances in staff areas.

Keurig K-Mini Single Serve Coffee Maker

A break room coffee maker that fits on a crowded counter.

A slim single-cup pod brewer with a small water reservoir and a cord that tucks away. It makes one cup at a time, which suits a break room where people drift in at all hours.

Best for

A unit chipping in for a shared gift, where the old drip machine has seen things.

Worth knowing

Check with the unit first: some hospitals restrict appliances in staff areas. It fills one cup at a time, so there is no carafe for a crowd.

A group gift for the break room

A massage seat cushion

This is the gift that gets talked about. A shiatsu cushion straps onto a break room chair, and anyone with ten minutes can sit back and let it work on their back. It needs an outlet and a chair it can strap to, and anyone with a back injury should skip it.

Snailax Shiatsu Massage Seat Cushion with Heat

Fifteen minutes in the break room chair, and the back feels less like a fence post.

A cushion that straps onto a chair and rolls shiatsu nodes up and down the back, with optional heat and a vibrating seat. It plugs into the wall and has an auto shut-off timer.

Best for

A shared break room, bought by the whole team or by a manager for the whole team.

Worth knowing

Needs a wall outlet and a chair it can strap to. Check the unit is fine with it first. Skip it with a back injury, and skip the heat on numb skin.

A team puzzle

A big 2000 piece puzzle on a spare table becomes a slow unit project. Day shift does the edges, nights fill in the sky, and someone on weekends finds the one piece everyone swore was missing. Measure the table first, and get a board that slides out of the way at lunch.

Buffalo Games 2000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Best for

A break room with a spare table, and teams who like a slow group project.

Worth knowing

It is big when finished, so measure the table. A puzzle mat or a board that slides away keeps it safe from lunch.

One each, for everyone

Small things every nurse takes home. Put them in a simple bag with a name on it.

Badge reels in bulk

Badge reels get tapped, swiped and snapped all shift, and they break. A bulk pack means everyone gets a fresh one at once, with spares for the ones that snap by Friday.

Best for

Nurses Week bags for a whole unit, new starter welcome packs.

Worth knowing

Bulk reels are lighter duty than a single premium reel. Look for a swivel clip and a reinforced cord.

Hand cream in small tubes

Nurses clean their hands constantly, and the CDC’s hand hygiene guideline recommends hand lotion to help protect skin from all that washing. A multipack of small fragrance-free tubes splits nicely, one per bag.

Best for

Team gift bags, stocking fillers, and anyone who washes their hands fifty times a shift.

Worth knowing

Thick and a little sticky at first, so it is best at the end of a shift or before bed.

Lip balm

Masks and dry hospital air are hard on lips. A multipack of lip balm is cheap, splits into one tube per person, and rounds out a gift bag. Pick the plain beeswax one if your unit avoids scents.

Worth knowing

Most packs mix flavors, and some have a mint tingle. Look for the plain beeswax pack if your unit avoids scents.

How to make a bulk gift personal

This is the part people remember, and most of it costs nothing.

  • Write a note to each person. One sentence, by name, about something specific they did. “You stayed late to help with the admission in bed 4” beats “Thanks for all you do.”
  • Use real cards. A box of blank thank-you cards makes this easy and looks better than a printed list.
  • Thank the whole team. Include the nursing assistants, unit clerks and float nurses. They notice when they are left out.
  • Show up on nights. If you are a day manager, coming in early or staying late once to say thanks to the night shift means a lot.
  • Ask what they would like. Sometimes the honest answer is “better parking” or “a working ice machine.” You cannot gift-wrap that, but you can raise it.

Best for

Making a bulk gift personal: one line each, by name.

Worth knowing

Pick plain cards with space to write, not ones with a long printed message.

Gifts to skip

  • Novelty mugs. Every nurse already owns too many.
  • Scented candles and lotions. Not for work, and not everyone likes the same smell.
  • Branded swag in place of a thank-you. A logo pen from the hospital is advertising.
  • A big sheet cake at 2 p.m. Lovely for days, gone by nights. Pick food that keeps.
  • Anything that needs storing, assembling or cleaning daily. Lockers are small and break rooms are smaller.

The quick version

  • Food: a snack box, a popcorn tin, wrapped chocolate squares.
  • Drinks: coffee pods, a tea sampler, a small pod coffee maker.
  • Group gift: a massage seat cushion or a big team puzzle.
  • One each: badge reels, small hand creams, lip balm, and a handwritten card.
