Nursing school does not end with one ceremony. It ends with a pinning, then a graduation, then weeks of studying for the licensing exam, then a first job with a badge that finally says RN. Your new grad is proud, tired and probably eating cereal for dinner.
Most graduation lists hand them the same stuff every working nurse gets. This one does not. It is built around the milestone itself: things to keep from these few weeks, and a few things for the very first year of the job. If you want shift gear instead, see the main gifts for nurses guide, or answer a few questions in the gift finder.

Before you buy: two quick questions
What stage are they at? Before the ceremony, a stole is perfect. Right after, a frame or shadow box. Once they pass the exam, the name stamp. Once they start work, the planner and padfolio.
Have they passed the NCLEX yet? To work as an RN, every new grad has to pass the licensing exam, run by NCSBN. If they have not taken it yet, hold anything with “RN” on it until they have. Nobody needs that pressure on the gift wrap.
Keepsakes from pinning and graduation
A shadow box for the pin
The pinning ceremony is the nursing tradition where new grads receive their school’s pin. The pin comes from the school, so the gift is somewhere to keep it. A shadow box with a pinnable linen back holds the pin, a photo from the day, the tassel and later their first hospital badge. It ends up on a wall instead of in a drawer.
Americanflat Shadow Box Frame
Somewhere for the pin, the first badge and the photo from pinning day.
A deep display frame with a linen back you can pin things to. Big enough for a nursing pin, a graduation photo, a first hospital badge and a tassel.
- Back
- Pinnable linen, per the maker
- Sizes
- Several, from small to large
Best for
A keepsake from the pinning ceremony that does not live in a drawer.
Worth knowing
Check the depth if you want to add a cap or a folded stole.
A proper diploma frame
The diploma comes home in a cardboard tube and, if nobody steps in, stays there for six years. A wood frame with a mat fixes that. Check the diploma size before you order, because not every school prints on standard paper.
Diploma Frame with Mat (8.5 x 11)
The diploma deserves better than the cardboard tube it came home in.
A wood diploma frame with a mat cut for a standard 8.5 by 11 inch certificate. Later it can swap to their first nursing license printout or a certification.
- Fits
- 8.5 x 11 inch with mat
- Frame
- Wood, glass or acrylic front by listing
Best for
Graduation day, and the parent who wants it on a wall by the weekend.
Worth knowing
Check the diploma size first. Some schools print larger, and some mats are cut for 11 by 14.
A stole for the photos
A satin nursing stole over the gown makes every graduation photo say exactly what they did. Afterward it folds into the shadow box. Check the ceremony rules first, since some schools only allow official honor stoles.
Nursing Graduation Stole
Something to wear in the photos that says exactly what they just survived.
A satin stole worn over the graduation gown, often printed or embroidered with "Nursing", "RN" or a nurse symbol. Some sellers add a name or class year.
- Material
- Satin
- Options
- Plain, printed or personalized by listing
Best for
Graduation photos, then the shadow box afterward.
Worth knowing
Check the school rules first. Some ceremonies only allow official honor stoles and cords.
A charm bracelet
A small piece of jewelry is the gift that gets worn long after the balloons are gone. A charm bracelet with a stethoscope or an “RN” charm is a lovely choice from a parent or grandparent. It is for days off, though: many hospitals ask staff to keep wrists bare during patient care, so do not expect it on shift.
Nurse Charm Bracelet
A small charm for a big day, worn on days off.
A bracelet with nursing charms such as a stethoscope, a heart or "RN". Many come with a gift box and a short card, which saves you finding one.
- Style
- Charm or bangle, by listing
- Charms
- Stethoscope, heart, RN
Best for
A keepsake from a parent, a grandparent or a best friend from clinicals.
Worth knowing
For days off, not the unit: many hospitals ask staff to keep wrists bare during patient care.
A book that gets the job
Christie Watson worked as a nurse for twenty years, and The Language of Kindness follows her from birth to death and most moments in between. It is warm and honest, and it puts words to things a new nurse is about to feel for the first time. Write a note on the first page. They will keep it.
It is also a sneaky gift for the rest of the family, who will finally understand why the new grad is too tired to come to brunch.
The Language of Kindness, by Christie Watson
A book about nursing that reminds them why they signed up.
A memoir by a nurse of twenty years, following her career from births to deaths and most things in between. Warm, honest and full of the small moments that make the job.
- Format
- Paperback, hardcover, Kindle
- Subject
- A nursing memoir
Best for
A new grad who reads, and anyone who wants their family to understand what nursing is.
Worth knowing
It does not skip the hard parts. A gentle read for most, a heavy one in a rough week.
For the day they pass
Passing the licensing exam is the moment the letters become real. A self-inking stamp with their name and new credentials is a small, funny, very personal way to celebrate it. Plenty of units are fully electronic now, so this one is more keepsake than tool, and that is fine.
Only order it after the result is in, and check exactly how they want their credentials written.
Personalized Nurse Name Stamp (Self-Inking)
Their name and new letters, in ink, for the first time.
A self-inking stamp made with their name and credentials, like "Jane Smith, RN". Handy wherever paperwork still lives, and a fun way to see the new title in print.
- Type
- Self-inking
- Text
- Name and credentials, custom
Best for
A small, personal gift right after they pass the licensing exam.
Worth knowing
Wait until they have passed and know the exact credentials. Many units are fully electronic, so it may be more keepsake than tool.
For starting the first job
A padfolio for interviews
New grads go to a lot of interviews, then a lot of orientation. A padfolio holds resumes, references, a BLS card and a notepad, and makes them look like they have it all together (even if they do not).
Samsill Professional Padfolio
For job interviews, residency orientation and looking like you have it together.
A zippered or folding padfolio with a writing pad, a pocket for resumes and certificates, and slots for cards. Holds your BLS card, license verification and references in one place.
- Includes
- Writing pad and document pockets
- Finish
- Faux leather
Best for
New grads heading into interviews and their first orientation week.
Worth knowing
Not something to take onto the unit. It is for the interview room and the classroom.
A planner for the first year
Many hospitals start new grads in a nurse residency program, which means classes and check-ins on top of shifts. Add a first paycheck, a first apartment and a rotating schedule, and things get busy fast. An undated planner starts whenever the job does, not in January, and has room for a first real budget too.
Clever Fox Planner (Undated)
For a schedule that suddenly includes orientation, residency classes and real bills.
An undated weekly and monthly planner with goal and budget pages. Undated means it can start the week the first job does, not in January.
- Layout
- Weekly and monthly, undated
- Extras
- Goal and budget pages, stickers
Best for
The first year: shift schedules, class days in a nurse residency, and a first paycheck budget.
Worth knowing
Paper only. If they live in their phone calendar, pick something else.
Big ticket: an iPad
For a parent, a partner or a family group gift. An iPad holds review books and question banks for the last stretch of exam prep, then reference apps, continuing education courses and every streaming service they will watch on days off. Add a compatible Apple Pencil if the budget allows.
Apple iPad (11-inch)
Every textbook, every lecture slide and every question bank in one thin slab.
Apple's standard iPad. With a compatible Apple Pencil it handles handwritten notes on lecture slides, and it runs the e-textbooks and question bank apps most programs use.
- Screen
- 11-inch
- Notes
- Works with a compatible Apple Pencil, sold separately
Best for
Students drowning in PDFs and heavy textbooks, and handwritten notes you can search.
Worth knowing
The Pencil, case and keyboard are extra. Check which Apple Pencil works with the model you buy, and whether your program's testing software runs on it.
Gifts to skip
- Another “nurse” mug, shirt or wine glass. They got several at the pinning ceremony, and possibly a few more at graduation.
- Anything with “RN” on it before they pass. Wait for the result. It is worth the wait.
- Scrubs in a random color. Most hospitals assign a color by role, and they will not know theirs until orientation.
- A watch or rings for work. Many units ask for bare wrists and hands during patient care.
- Perfume or scented lotion. Many units discourage strong scents around patients.
- Self-help books about burnout. Kind thought, terrible timing. Let them enjoy the first month.
Quick picks by moment
- Pinning day: shadow box, stole
- Graduation: diploma frame, charm bracelet, The Language of Kindness
- Exam passed: name stamp
- First job: padfolio, planner
- Big family gift: iPad
